Drought-stricken farmers in India have come up with a novel and sexy way to end a severe drought. They have asked the local unmarried women to get naked and plough…for rain.
Farmers in the eastern Indian state of Bihar have tried numerous things to appease the Gods and make it rain. Recently they tried making frogs get married in the hopes that it would open the skies. It did not. Now the farmers have turned to naked women, getting them to plough the fields in the nude in the hope that they will embarrass the weather gods and bring some much-needed monsoon rain.
Witnesses have reported seeing naked girls reciting ancient hymns and working the land. Upendra Kumar, a village council official from Bihar’s remote Banke Bazaar town, says, “They believe their acts would get the weather gods badly embarrassed, who in turn would ensure bumper crops by sending rains. This is the most trusted social custom in the area and the villagers have vowed to continue this practice until it rains very heavily.”
